Description of the implementation
For many years Chwarznieńska Street in Gdynia, which is one of the main access routes leading to the S1 route, has become a trap for city buses during rush hours. The assumption of the Bus Counter Strip project was to create a safe solution that would allow the acceleration of city bus traffic during the most intensive traffic hours.
It is a unique solution on a European scale – one of the lanes is temporarily converted into a lane heading in the opposite direction than usual. Thanks to this solution the buses can bypass about 3 km of the traffic jams and gain several minutes. 39 variable message signs (VMS) and two prismatic variable message signs (PVMS), installed and integrated into the TRISTAR system by TIOMAN, help to inform drivers about the current traffic direction
